![]() “The wise know their limitations the foolish do not” (Hoff 43). “A fish can’t whistle and neither can I” This passage is saying that it’s okay that you are not able to do some things because you were probably not meant to. You also know where you don’t belong” (Hoff 41). The Cottleston Pie Principle was based upon a song Pooh sang in Winnie the Pooh however the term Cottleston Pie merely meant Inner nature. “When you know and respect your own Inner Nature, you know where you belong. In the beginning of the chapter Cottleston Pie Rabbit attempted to be rid of Kanga and Roo with a clever idea despite his intellect his plan failed. The second line, “A fly can’t bird, but a bird can fly” is saying that everyone should stick to what they were meant to do, and basically, be who you are. The narrator and Pooh then touch upon the fact that individuals with square pegs tend to attempt putting their pegs into round holes. The author writes about the Cottleston Pie Principle, which is based off a song that Pooh sings in Winnie-the-Pooh called “Cottleston Pie”. The Cottleston Pie Principle was based upon a song Pooh sang in Winnie the Pooh however the term Cottleston Pie merely meant Inner nature. One chapter in the book called “Cottleston Pie” was very interesting to me. Also Pooh's name comes from the written character P'u, which interprets into the Uncarved Block or simplicity. Let’s explore one together called the Cottleston Pie Principle. He allows us to revisit the lessons that Pooh was attempting to teach us from his adventures in Pooh Corner with Rabbit, Piglet, Eeyore, Owl, Kanga & Roo and Christopher Robin. He goes with the flow of his nature and as Hoff writes, "Pooh just is". In reading the book The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff. Each character from Winnie-the-Pooh has a different characteristic that describes their character: "While Eeyore frets.and Piglet hesitates.and Rabbit calculates.and Owl pontificates.Pooh just is." Pooh represents the wu-wei, which means "acting naturally". Hoff basically is illustrating how one of the greatest childhood stories' main character, Pooh Bear, is actually one of the world's greatest Taoists masters. Winnie-the-Pooh was one of my favorite stories as a kid so I thought I would read some of Benjamin Hoff's book, The Tao of Pooh. But Hoff argues that it doesn’t matter-Pooh naturally embodies these concepts anyway, so he’s wise whether he knows it or not.I was interested in reading the book The Tao of Pooh. Ironically, Pooh constantly misunderstands Hoff’s Taoist concepts and never really grasps them by the end of the book. Throughout the book, Pooh frequently shows up around Hoff’s writing table to chat with him. For Hoff, these heroic deeds further prove that Taoist principles lead people to greater wisdom, compassion, and success. ![]() ![]() He helps Rabbit find his way home, saves Eeyore and Roo from falling in the stream, and teaches Piglet to believe in his own potential. ![]() Because he embraces simplicity instead of cleverness and keeps his mind empty instead of filling it with ideas, Pooh becomes an unlikely hero. I really like the simplicity of the idea of Cottleston Pie and the simplicity in taoism overall. Pooh embodies P’u (the Uncarved Block) because he is simple and clear-minded, and he illustrates Wu Wei through his effortless, instinctual actions. Although I disliked some of the writing aspects that Benjamin Hoff chose to use in The Tao of Pooh, I agreed with certain aspects of the taoist principles he mentioned in his book, especially the Cottleston Pie Principle. Pooh’s tranquility, reflectiveness, and appreciation for life show that he understands Tao, or the nature of the universe, and chooses to live in harmony with it instead of fighting against it. Hoff argues that Pooh Bear has the kind of mindset that Taoists strive to develop and lives the kind of life that Taoists strive to live. The novel’s central character is the protagonist of the Winnie-the-Pooh books and, according to Benjamin Hoff, a model Taoist sage.
